Indian captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Suryakumar Yadav opened up about their emotion-filled night during the Indo-Pak clash in the 2022 T20 WC.
That particular match between the arch-rivals was perhaps the best match-up they have had in the ICC T20 World Cup history. The fixture had possibly everything that a fan would want to see - drama, suspense, twists & turns, heartbreak, and sheer joy, almost as if it was a Bollywood movie. And the lead character was, of course, Virat Kohli.
The former India captain, who was wounded by the 10-wicket loss his side had suffered in 2021, was determined to get his team over the line. Virat Kohli acted as the Lone wolf throughout India's run-chase and was there in the crease until the winning runs were scored.
Tonight, he has the chance of repeating the history once again when he faces Pakistan in Group A of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
What makes this fixture even more special is that the latest chapter of the India-Pakistan rivalry will be written in the iconic New York City in the USA. Ahead of this fixture, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav went back in time to rejoice in the feeling of victory once again.
What did Rohit Sharma say?
While speaking to the ICC in the build-up to this fixture, Rohit Sharma spoke about the things that happened at the Melbourne Cricket Ground that night. Just like an honest captain, Rohit admitted that India's initiation of the run-chase was not so good as they had lost 4 wickets in a very quick succession.
Rohit Sharma revealed that he was too nervous to watch the match live from the dugout and he was sitting inside the dressing room as a result. However, in the final over, Rohit came out to see Ravichandran Ashwin score the winning runs and also lifted Virat Kohli in appreciation.
"90,000 people at the stadium. We were in a bit of trouble with ourbat. We lost a couple of wickets early. And then Virat and Hardik stitched a very good partnership there. I'm a very nervous person, I was sitting inside the changing room and not watching it live. Because obviously it was quite tense when the last over was being bowled, I came out and enjoyed that moment as well," Rohit Sharma told the ICC.
Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant fail to describe the feeling of victory
Rishabh Pant, while speaking about the victory, had fallen short of words to describe the feeling. Suryakumar Yadav still managed to talk about Virat Kohli's knock which even defied the win predictor which was indicating towards a 2-3% of India's chances for a victory.
"When we were 4 down and I was sitting at the dugout, saw the screen and it showed it had only 2-3% of win predictor. It changed everything. Can't say we were very sure that we are going to win that game but we were definitely back in the competition," Suryakumar Yadav said.
