After the ICC World Cup 2023, India and South Africa will face each other in a multi-format series. The India vs South Africa tour comprises three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests that will commence in December. South Africa will enjoy the home advantage in the series.
India is a dominating team when it comes to T20Is. South Africa gave a tough challenge to India during the last two away series. This time, India will have a challenge against the hosts South Africa. In this article, we talk about 5 Indian players who can retire from T20Is after the South Africa tour.
IND vs SA: 5 Indian Players Who Can Retire From T20Is After South Africa Tour
5. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik is the first player on this list. Karthik made a comeback to the T20I team last year and also played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. However, after his poor show in the tournament, he was dropped from the team.
The right-handed batsman has already crossed 38 years and his return to the national team is almost impossible. Karthik might announce his international retirement soon.
4. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a regular member of T20I and ODIs until last year. Due to his poor show in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, he was removed from the shortest format. Young pacers like Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, and Umran Malik were picked in the shortest format and they also did a brilliant job.
If Bhuvi is not picked in the T20I series against South Africa, he can be sure that he will not be picked for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 squad. Hence, he might retire from T20Is after the South Africa tour.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin played for India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. However, his selection ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal in the tournament was highly criticized by many. Ashwin was later dropped from the T20I side and did not feature in any T20I.
Indian selectors want to prepare a young side for T20Is. Hence, veteran spinner Ashwin will find it hard to return to the shortest format. Hence, he can retire from T20Is soon.

2. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan last played in T20Is in 2021. Later, he played regularly in ODIs until 2023, when he was dropped from the ODI team too. Shubman Gill has replaced him as an opener across all formats.
In T20Is, India has many young and emerging openers like Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Dhawan, who is 38 years old, is in the last stage of his career. His T20I return is almost unlikely and he might pull curtains down on his career soon.
1. Umesh Yadav
Many might not remember that Umesh Yadav’s last T20I game took place last year. The right-arm pacer last played a T20I against South Africa in October 2022. Later, he did not any T20I games. Yadav is 36 years old and with young pacers emerging in the shortest format, his T20I career is almost over. Hence, he can bid goodbye to T20Is soon.
