Bangalore Wicket-Keeper Batsman KL Rahul was on cloud nine after getting to know that former India batting great Sunil Gavaskar had put his 101-run knock against South Africa in the Top 10 list of greatest Centuries by an Indian Batsman in the history of Cricket.

Rahul’s knock in the 1st inning at Centurion saved team India from major embarrassment and he was easily the best batting prospect on a day where the Indian batting line-up faltered terribly against a dangerous South African bowling attack that had removed more than half of the on Day 1 itself with Kagiso Rabada leading the pact.

Before the match, it was said that it would be a good toss to win for Rohit Sharma as India should be batting first on a pitch that has seen 13 victories for teams going to bat first while teams batting 2nd have won 12 times out of the 18 Tests played at the SuperSport Park Stadium.

Rabada opened the account for himself and South Africa by getting the big wicket of Rohit Sharma for just 5 followed by back-to-back wickets for debutant Nandre Burger who removed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill for 17 and 2 runs.

With new batters in the crease, South Africa anticipated a partnership stitching between Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli which had reached 68 runs but Kagiso Rabada’s unplayable swinger led to the dismissal of Iyer before India’s best batter in South Africa (by numbers), Kohli departed after edging Rabada’s delivery for 38.

As India looked in a tough, in fact very tough situation, the onus was on KL Rahul to deliver something special. He first helped India reach the 200-run mark on Day 1, something that looked highly unlikely to happen before the Stumps were called by the Umpires with KL Rahul playing at 70.

Many said that his 70 runs in the Centurion track were much more than a Century as it helped team India to at least gain a little bit of control over the game. On Day 2, KL Rahul completed his 8th Test Ton and 2nd at the SuperSport Park Stadium, becoming the first overseas batter to score multiple centuries at the venue.

It was his 1st Test century since December 2021 when he scored his first Century at Centurion against South Africa in a Boxing Day Test match that India went on to win by 113 runs with KL Rahul getting the Man of the Match award as well.

KL Rahul Says “Wow” On Sunil Gavaskar’s Top 10 Remarks

During a press conference yesterday after the conclusion of Day 2, a reporter told KL Rahul that Sunil Gavaskar has labeled his inning as one of the best and also included it in the Top 10 best Test centuries by an Indian. As a response, the first thing that came out of Rahul’s mouth was “Wow” which indicated that Rahul was loving life in South Africa and Gavaskar’s remarks made him feel like the happiest person alive.

“I’ve been watching cricket for the last 50 years, but I can surely say that this hundred by Rahul is in the Top 10 centuries scored by Indians in Test cricket.” – Sunil Gavaskar said.

After getting to know about Gavaskar’s comments, KL Rahul stated that he feels very humbled to have received such a compliment from Sunil Gavaskar himself and also spoke about how he went on about his inning.

“Firstly, I’m very humbled he’s made that comment. It’s a pretty huge compliment to get. Batting in the middle order, what I’ve realized is that you can’t really plan your innings all that much when you walk in. There is a situation in front of you. The game tells you how you need to play and what you need to do in that time and in that moment.” – Rahul said.
