The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) intended to celebrate Virat Kohli’s 35th birthday in grand style at the Eden Gardens. However, their plans were halted due to directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Virat Kohli, who is regarded as one of the greats of the modern era, turned 35 on Sunday, November 5. The right-handed batter will be in action on his birthday as the Men in Blue will face the Temba Bavuma-led South African team in a group-stage match in Kolkata.
CAB Set To Honor Virat Kohli With A Specially Crafted Golden Bat
Despite initial plans being disrupted, the CAB has chosen an alternative approach to honoring Virat Kohli on his birthday. The board has planned to gift him a unique keepsake in the form of a specially crafted golden bat as a warm gesture to celebrate the occasion.
Earlier, the CAB had ambitious plans for the former Indian skipper’s birthday, including distributing 70,000 Kohli face masks to spectators and organizing a fireworks show. Unfortunately, they couldn’t obtain the necessary permissions for the celebration.
The BCCI was cautious about commemorating Kohli’s birthday extensively because it could pose marketing challenges for the World Cup broadcaster due to potential conflicts of interest. Nevertheless, a modest light and sound show will still be allowed for spectators.
Former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, along with his elder brother and CAB president Snehasish Ganguly, visited Eden Gardens before the match. They had a brief discussion with team head coach Rahul Dravid at the iconic cricket ground in Kolkata.
