Young Indian batter Shubman Gill failed to score big the second time round in two days in Cape Town. He scored 36 in the first innings and his runs were crucial keeping in mind that India only scored 153 in their first innings. Overall, the young batter scored 74 runs in the two Test matches at an average of 18.50.
In the second innings with India well poised to win the Test match, Gill fell to Kagiso Rabada in the ninth over of the Indian innings with a score of 57. The ball that dismissed Gill, kept lower than the batter anticipated and lost his timber as he was dismissed for just 10.
India lost the wicket of Virat Kohli soon after losing Gill and it was Shreyas Iyer who hit the winning runs for India with the Men in Blue needing four runs to win. This was India’s first-ever Test win at Newlands, Cape Town, and their fifth overall in South Africa.
India are the first Asian team to win at Newlands with Rohit Sharma remaining unbeaten on 17 off 22 deliveries in the tricky chase. Kohli’s wicket down the leg side was unlucky for India as he was looking good to take India home.

This is also the shortest Test match ever in terms of balls played. Only 642 balls were bowled in the second Test in Cape Town. A total of 33 wickets were lost inside two days and a century was scored as well. South Africa batting first were bowled out for 55 in the first innings. India in response were bowled out for 153 with the last wickets falling for 0 runs.
In the second innings, riding on Aiden Markram’s sixth Test ton, South Africa scored 176 leaving India 79 runs to win. The Men in Blue chased down the target inside 12 overs with Mohammed Siraj winning the men of the series. Jasprit Bumrah and Deal Elgar for their performances won the Player of the Series awards.
The bowlers from both teams reaped rewards on a bowling-friendly Cape Town wicket. Siraj took six wickets in the first innings while Bumrah took another six-for in the second innings. Kagiso Rabada was the best South African bowler in the Test match taking four wickets in the Test match. Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger took three each during India’s first innings as well.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was a relieved man after leveling the series against South Africa. This is the first time since the 2010-11 series that India have not lost a Test series in South Africa. Last time in 2021-22, they lost 2-1.
“A great feat. In Centurion, we had to learn from the mistakes. We came back very well, especially our bowlers. Had some plans and the boys got rewarded. We applied ourselves, we batted well to get a 100-run lead, not pleasing to see the last six wickets. We knew that it’s going to be a short game, we knew ever run matters, to get that lead was very important.
“(On Siraj) Very special, something you don’t get to see very often. We spoke about keeping things simple and that’s what happened. The pitch did the rest. Lot of credit to Siraj, Bumrah, Mukesh and Prasidh. Whenever you come here, it’s challenging. We have played a lot of good cricket outside India, we take a lot of pride.” said Rohit Sharma on India’s performance in the Test match.
