Gautam Gambhir’s penchant for delivering bold comments every now and then is not a secret anymore. The former India opener loves to come up with a different point of view and he never shies away from speaking his mind out.
He was at it again on Monday (September 11) after the India vs Pakistan game in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. India thrashed Pakistan by 228 runs to open their campaign in Super 4 in style. Unbeaten centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul and fifties from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill guided India to a mammoth total of 356 for 2 in the allotted 50 overs.
The Indian bowlers then bowled out Pakistan for a paltry total of 128 runs to power the team to a mammoth 228-run win. It is now India’s biggest win in terms of runs against Pakistan. Kuldeep Yadav was the star with the ball. The chinaman spinner picked up 5 wickets to blow Pakistan away. He conceded just 25 runs in his 8 overs and picked up his maiden 5-wicket haul against Pakistan.
Gautam Gambhir on Man of the Match award:
Virat Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Match for his brilliant knock of 122 not out. The knock came off just 94 balls and was studded with 9 fours and two brilliant sixes. And while not many questioned the candidate picked for the Man of the Match award, Gautam Gambhir did. The World Cup-winning bowler said that Kuldeep Yadav deserved the award ahead of Kohli.
“For me, it’s Kuldeep Yadav. Can’t look beyond him. I know Virat got a hundred KL (Rahul) got a hundred. Rohit (Sharma), Shubman Gill got fifties but on a wicket like this where it was seaming swinging, if someone get five wickets in 8 overs, especially against Pakistan batters, who play spin really well, is a game-changing moment,” said Gautam Gambhir.
I can understand if it was Australia, South Africa or New Zealand because they don’t play spin that well. This just shows the quality of the bowler. He beat batters in the air and he beat batters off the wicket as well. Going into the World Cup, that is great for Indian cricket because now you have two attacking pacers upfront and Kuldeep… Three bowlers who can take wickets at any stage of the game,” he added.
Meanwhile, confident India will be looking to seal their position in the final of the Asia Cup when they take on Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 12). The Rohit Sharma-led side needs a win against the co-hosts to make it to the final of the continental championship.
