Team India and Sri Lanka played out a hard-fought thriller on Tuesday (September 12) when they locked horns in the fourth Super 4 match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Both the teams were high on confidence coming into the game. While IND had registered a record 228-run win over Pakistan in their previous outing, Sri Lanka were on a 13-match winning streak in ODIs. And the two in-form teams played out an Asia Cup classic.
IND won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave the team a good start before 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage hit back. He ran through IND’s top and middle order to help Sri Lanka bowl out IND for a modest total of 213 runs. The young spinner finished with impressive figures of 5-40, including the key wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
His teammate and fellow spinner Charith Asalanka also made the most of the conditions in Colombo and picked up four wickets for 18 runs. For IND, Rohit was the highest scorer with the bat as he played a fine knock of 53 runs and added 80 runs for the opening wicket with Shubman Gill.
