USA, on Wednesday (June 12), became the first team to be penalized five runs for failing to start an over within the allotted time more than twice in a game.

The incident happened after the 15th over when they were playing against India in the 25th game of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. On a tough pitch, India were in a spot of bother as they needed 35 runs from the last five overs. From the 11th to the 15th over, India had managed to score only 29 runs and the pressure was firmly on them before they were awarded 5 runs that brought down the equation to run-a-ball.

USA were penalized by the umpires for their failure to start the over within a minute of the previous one ending for the third time in the game. Earlier this year in March, the ICC had mandated the use of stop-clocks in between overs in both the white-ball formats to deal with the slow over-rate issue. The rule came into effect in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

As per the rule, the bowling team needs to start a new over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over. The failure of the bowling team to start the over within a minute of the conclusion of the previous over will attract two warnings before the subsequent breaches would attract 5 runs as a penalty.

India beat the USA to make it to the Super 8s:

Talking about the game, India went on to beat the USA by seven wickets to book their place in the Super 8s. Chasing 111, India crossed the finishing line with nine balls remaining. The Men in Blue were off to a disastrous start as Virat Kohli (0) and Rohit Sharma (3) failed to get going.

Rishabh Pant got the start but could not stay for long and was out for 18 before Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube stitched together an unbeaten match-winning stand. The duo shared an unbeaten 72-run stand for the fourth wicket to take India home.

India have become the first team from Group A to qualify for the next stage. The USA, on the other hand, are still in contention for a spot in the Super 8s. A win over Ireland in their last game would be enough for them to join India in the next round.
