A BCCI official recently shared important fitness updates on KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer and also explained why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli did not play the last two ODIs against West Indies.

As per reports in Cricbuzz, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are unlikely to play the Asia Cup 2023 as both of them have not recovered enough to bat 50 overs and come back and field the next set of 50 overs.

Both the players have been giving regular health updates of their fitness on social media but the board feels that the players should not be rushed for comeback, especially with the ODI World Cup at home.

“They have resumed batting in the nets and are currently undergoing strength and fitness drills. The BCCI Medical Team is satisfied with their progress and will increase their intensity in terms of both skills and strength and conditioning in the coming days,” the update said about Rahul and Iyer.

Although both the batters have resumed batting at the nets, the BCCI official said that they have not recovered enough to field the who 50 overs.

“It’s not just whether they can bat, again. At this stage, it cannot be ascertained if they can field at full fitness in a 50 overs match,” a BCCI official told Hindustan Times.

He further explained why senior players Virat and Rohit did not play the last two ODIs against West Indies. India lost the second ODI in the absence of the senior players. However, they made a grand comeback in the third ODI and won it by 200 runs and the series 2-1 without the two of them.

Management Keen On Preparing Backups For KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer: BCCI Official

The BCCI official said that Kohli and Rohit were set to play all three ODIs against West Indies but when the board came to know about the fitness updates of Iyer and Rahul, they were keen on giving chances to Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav to prepare their backups for the Asia Cup 2023.

“Rohit and Kohli were originally supposed to play all the three ODIs against the West Indies as part of the preparations for the Asia Cup and World Cup but once the team management came to know about the grim fitness updates of Iyer and Rahul, they had to alter their plans. They had little option but to prepare backups for Rahul and Iyer. And the best possible way to do that was to give chances to players like Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav” the BCCI official said.
