Suryakumar Yadav has taken T20I cricket by storm. After his dazzling performances in the domestic circuit and IPL, the right-handed batsman made his debut for India in 2021 and has not looked back since then.
Fast forward to 2023 and Suryakumar Yadav is the number-one-ranked T20I batsman in the world. The 32-year-old is widely considered as the best T20I batsman in the world. Last year, he was also named India’s vice-captain in T20Is.

So far, he has played 48 T20Is and has scored 1675 runs with the help of three centuries and 13 fifties. Suryakumar Yadav averages more than 46 and has a strike rate of 175 in the shortest format of international cricket. With Suryakumar proving himself in T20 cricket, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has said that the batsman can be best utilized as a specialist T20 player and should not be included in the ODI side.

“I would like to promote him as a dedicated T20 batter but that is my personal view. It is a very personal thing because if you keep giving him chances in 50-over cricket, Suryakumar Yadav has the ability to perform in 50-over cricket as well,” Manjrekar told News24 Sports.
“I believe because he is not a 20-year-old player and the level at which his T20 game has gone, a little complication can come in his game if you play him in 50-over cricket,” he added.

Sanjay Manjrekar on Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles in ODIs:
Unlike his performance in T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav has failed to prove himself in the ODI format so far. He is yet to cement his spot in India’s ODI team. The right-hander will have an opportunity to do so in the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies. He has been named in both the white-ball squads for the series. In 23 ODIs, he has scored a modest 433 runs so far at an average of 24.05.

“When he played 50-over matches for India, when he got dismissed thrice off the first ball, it took him some time to regain his T20 form as well. He got derailed slightly. So I would want to keep life simple for him,” said Manjrekar recalling Suryakumar’s struggle during the ODI series against Australia before IPL 2023.
“However, if any selector thinks that he needs Suryakumar Yadav’s ability even in 50 overs, it will also not be a wrong decision or bad thinking,” he added.
