India’s senior batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made a good start with the bat in the ongoing tour of West Indies. Both the batsmen were under immense pressure to deliver after their failure in the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia last month.

And they have bounced back well so far. While Rohit Sharma scored a fine century in the ongoing first Test in Dominica, Kohli looked solid during his unbeaten 36-run knock. Kohli will have a good opportunity to register yet another big score when he walks out to bat on day three of the Test.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a solid start with the bat. After Ravichandran Ashwin’s five-wicket haul helped India bowl out West Indies for just 150, the openers shared a 229-run stand for the opening wicket.

The partnership ended when debutant Alick Athanaze dismissed Rohit Sharma for 103 runs. The India skipper’s knock came off 221 balls and was studded with 10 fours and a couple of sixes. Shubman Gill did not last long before Kohli and Jaiswal steadied the ship with an unbeaten stand of 72 runs.

Deep Dasgupta on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s situation:

While Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have started their tour of the West Indies on a good note, former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has explained why it will be tricky series for both of them. Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Dasgupta said:

“For someone like Rohit or Virat, these series are really tough ones because, if you score runs, more often than not people would say it was a sub-par team, conditions were favorable.

“And, if God forbid, you don’t score runs, then it’s like, ‘oh, you can’t score even here? Where would you score?’ It’s an argument very difficult to win for people like Rohit and Virat. Keeping that in mind, it was a phenomenal effort,” he added.

Speaking further, Dasgupta spoke about Rohit’s batting as an opener in Tests and pointed out his impressive record. He also explained how Rohit has made sure to do well in Tests as an opener.

“To be fair, he hasn’t played too many Tests away from home, especially in his new avatar as a Test opener. If you look at his record as an opener, it’s phenomenal. It’s just the mental discipline,” said the former cricketer.

“If you look at his game plan, it’s not rocket science. He doesn’t drive that much in Test cricket unless it’s extremely full. He’s got a definite game plan and that’s been productive for him. Even in tough conditions like England and Australia, that has paid off,” he added.
