India fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj has been rested for the forthcoming three-match ODI series between India and West Indies. The team management has taken the decision to manage the fast bowler’s workload in the lead-up to the all-important ICC World Cup 2023.

Mohammed Siraj has been playing non-stop cricket this year. At the start of the year, he was part of India’s ODI squads for the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The pacer played five of the six ODIs against the two oppositions. He also played in all three ODIs against Australia.

Before the ODIs against Australia, Mohammed Siraj had played in three of the four Tests against the same opposition. It was followed by the IPL where he played in all 14 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore before flying to England and the Caribbean for the WTC final and the two-match Test series respectively.

Mohammed Siraj rested for West Indies ODIs:

While Mohammed Siraj’s bowling partner Mohammed Shami was rested for the tour, he was named in the Test and the ODI squads. The pacer was expected to lead India’s attack in the ODIs too in the absence of other senior bowlers. However, the team management has decided to give him some much-needed break ahead of a busy period that will see the Men in Blue play the Asia Cup and the World Cup.

Mohammed Siraj flew back with the rest of the Test contingent – R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, KS Bharat, and Navdeep Saini – after the conclusion of the Test series. India have not named a replacement yet and is unlikely to do so. In his absence, Jaydev Unadkat, Shardul Thakur, Mukesh Kumar, Umran Malik, and Hardik Pandya will be the pace options for the team.

India’s ODI squad:

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar.
