Team India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has revealed a new role for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma in the team. Both the batsmen have made their T20I debut for Team India in the ongoing five-match series against West Indies.
Tilak Varma has played in all three games of the series so far while Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut in the third T20I. Tilak Varma has hit the ground running in T20Is and has impressed with the bat in all three innings so far. He has registered scores of 39, 51, and 49* in three games so far and is the leading run-scorer in the series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the other hand, failed to do well on his debut. The youngster, who scored 171 on his Test debut earlier on the ongoing tour, managed only 1 run on his T20I debut earlier this week. However, he is likely to get the chance to open the innings in the fourth T20I.
New roles for Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal:
While Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be looking to impress with the bat in the upcoming games, Paras Mhambrey has revealed that they are likely to bowl a few overs too. Speaking ahead of the fourth T20I, the India coach has said that the team is working on the bowling abilities of both the young batters.
India have lacked part-time bowlers in recent years and have been desperately seeking for few batsmen who can also bowl some good overs. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, and Yuvraj Singh used to make a big difference with their part-time bowling.
But since their retirement, India have struggled in that department as none of the big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav bowl in the game. And the team management is now making sure that youngsters like Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal make an impact with their bowling too.
“When you have someone who can chip in, it is nice. I have seen Tilak and Yashasvi bowl since U19 days. They are capable of being good bowlers. They can work on it at this level. When you got options like these, it is nice to have them. We will see them bowl soon hopefully, we are working on it. It will take time. Soon, we will see them bowling an over at least,” said Paras in a pre-match press conference.
Speaking ahead, Mhambrey also spoke about the pitch that will be used for the fourth T20I. India and West Indies are currently in the United States where the last two games will be played at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill.
“It is different (As compared to pitches earlier in the series), especially when it comes to soil. It is black soil, the kind of soil we get in North India. It is a good wicket, will be nice to bat on, with the ball coming to the bat nicely. That is what we saw in the nets. Stroke-making was easy. It could be a high-scoring game,” he said.
West Indies are currently leading the five-match series 2-1. India needs to win the fourth T20I on Saturday (August 12) to keep the series alive.
