While praising the Indian system that keeps producing talented youngsters on a regular basis, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has also taken a sly dig at Team India for their failure in ICC competitions in recent years.
Team India have not won the T20 World Cup since 2007 while they last won the 50-over World Cup in 2011. Their last ICC trophy came in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy. All three victories came under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Since then, India have constantly underperformed in ICC competitions. During the same period, West Indies have won two T20 World Cups, both under the captaincy of Daren Sammy.
The former West Indies skipper talked about India’s failure to win global competitions in recent years while speaking about some of the youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Daren Sammy lavished praise on Jaiswal, who made his Test and T20I debut in the ongoing tour of the West Indies. Jaiswal scored a stunning century on his Test debut but was out for just 1 on his T20I debut earlier this week.
“When you the see the players they’ve been able to produce, Hardik Pandya, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal all the guys they produced over the years but you must also remember who’s winning the international tournaments,” Daren Sammy told journalist Vimal Kumar.
“Like I said, Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson who didn’t play, he’s been performing. Hardik Pandya who’s young but he is seasoned in the team. Again, it speaks of the system they have that keeps producing these youngsters.
“Jaiswal has 1800 runs in First Class cricket in nine matches, nine hundreds and then he comes to Dominica in his debut game and he looks like he belonged at the international level. That comes from the standard of First Class cricket in India that is allowing the youngsters that when they come in to be ready for international cricket,” he added.
Daren Sammy eyes series win:
Meanwhile, Daren Sammy has an opportunity to guide West Indies to a famous series win over Team India. West Indies have not beaten India in a series of two or more matches, in any format, since 2016. They are currently leading the ongoing five-match T20I series 2-1 and need to win one of the remaining games to clinch the series.
It will be a massive confidence booster for the West Indies team ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup. West Indies will co-host the marquee event with the United States of America. The fourth T20I is scheduled to be played on August 12.
