Cheteshwar Pujara’s axing from the Test team has caused quite a storm in the Indian cricket fraternity. The star batsman was recently dropped from India’s Test team for the upcoming two-match series against West Indies.

The axing came after India’s loss against Australia in the World Test Championship final last month. The right-handed batsman managed scores of 14 and 27 as Australia thrashed India by 209 runs. Pujara, however, had a decent campaign in the 2021-23 WTC cycle. While he was not at his prolific best, he was India’s second-highest scorer with 928 runs in 32 innings.

The selectors’ decision of dropping Cheteshwar Pujara has been met with a range of reactions. While some said that the selectors took the right step ahead of starting the new WTC cycle, many opined that Pujara was made the scapegoat for the failures of other batsmen.

Lalchand Rajput on Cheteshwar Pujara’s axing:

Former India cricketer and team manager Lalchand Rajput has also reacted to the development. Rajput has backed the India selectors for their decision, saying that dropping Cheteshwar Pujara was a positive move. He praised the selectors for taking the bold decision and giving youngsters the chance to prove themselves.

“It is a positive move. We have to prepare for the next WTC cycle. You have to bring in youngsters slowly. You have to groom them, ease them into the rigours of international cricket. Hopefully, more young players will be given chances to represent the country. Ruturaj and Jaiswal have made a lot of runs. It will boost your bench strength.”

With Pujara out of the Test side, the selectors have handed a maiden call-up to uncapped duo Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Meanwhile, India will play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is too in addition to 2 Tests against the West Indies. The tour will begin this month with the Test series.
