Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra praised young batter Tilak Varma for scoring his maiden half-century during the second T20I match against the West Indies. Aakash Chopra highlighted that Tilak Varma showcased his talent and proved that he is ready to perform in international cricket.

Tilak Varma scored 51 runs off 41 deliveries, while other batters struggled to score in Guyana on Sunday, August 6. The Hardik Pandya-led team could only put up a target of 153 runs for the opposition. The left-handed batter’s knock went in vain as the hosts won the game with seven balls to spare.

Tilak Varma Is The Shining Star – Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said that Tilak Varma showed maturity at the age of 20, considering the exposure he gained in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“How well Tilak Varma is batting. Actually, Tilak Varma is the shining star. Yuzi Chahal is the shining star. Hardik Pandya’s bowling is the shining star. But the way, Tilak Varma batted, he showed once again that the guy has come ready,” Chopra said.

“To play with so much maturity at 20 years of age, this is the advantage of Gen Z because you play so much cricket. The kid has played two years of the IPL. So now when you reach this level, you come absolutely ready,” he added.

Varma received his maiden call-up to the senior team for the ongoing series following his impressive performances in the last two editions of the IPL. The southpaw scored 740 runs in 25 innings at an average of 38.95 and a strike rate of 144.53.

Now Our Players Come Absolutely Prepared – Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator said that players are now fully prepared for the international stage, highlighting that they used to reach the Indian level slightly underprepared in the past.

“This was not the case earlier. Slightly undercooked and underprepared players used to reach the Indian level earlier. Now our players come absolutely prepared for the international stage.”

“That was, of course, Tilak Varma. He hit his first half-century. He was slightly lucky for sure, but the guy has luck (lak) in his game. Hardik Pandya was playing well but he also got out,” he concluded.

The Men in Blue will take on the Rovman Powell-led team in a do-or-die match at the same venue in Guyana on Tuesday, August 9. The Hardik Pandya-led team will aim to win the next match and keep the series alive.
