Former India opener Aakash Chopra has reacted to Virat Kohli’s slow but solid knock so far in the ongoing first IND vs WI Test in Dominica.

India were already in a solid position when Virat Kohli came out to bat and join Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle thanks to a mammoth 229-run stand between the latter and Rohit Sharma for the opening wicket. India did lose Shubman Gill’s wicket cheaply but were still well on top when their former captain came to bat.

Although India were in a solid position, batting on the slow and sluggish pitch was not going to be easy for Virat Kohli. However, the former world number one Test batsman made the most of his vast experience. He did not get frustrated despite not being able to score runs freely and controlled himself from playing any loose shots.

Nothing describes his composed knock better than the fact that he batted 80 deliveries without hitting a single boundary. The India batting star hit his first four on the 81st delivery he faced only after he got a juicy flighted delivery outside the off stump. At the end of the day’s play, Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 36 as he and Jaiswal helped India close the day on 312 for 2. Jaiswal was unbeaten on 142 runs.

“Virat Kohli came after that. He is giving himself time. The opposition team is also looking extremely flat. They have used nine bowlers and didn’t take the second new ball until 100 overs. Virat Kohli is now looking good. He has not yet reached his fifty, so the small milestone is also left,” Chopra said.

“India have gone far ahead. They are 162 runs ahead and are going slightly slow because the pitch is extremely slow. It is difficult to score runs quickly on this pitch but batting can be done, it is possible to stand here,” he added.

With a lead of 162 runs, India will look to bat West Indies out of the match on day three.
