Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 266 runs in the two-match Test series against West Indies at an average of 88.66 and ended as the top run-getter in the series. He was a big positive for India in the words of former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta.

Indian skipper Rohit Shara spoke specifically about Jaiswal’s inclusion ahead of the start of the first Test. He said that India wanted a left-right combination which is Jaiswal opened the innings ahead of Gill.

The move resulted in a huge success as the Southpaw added 229 run-stand for the first wicket in the first Test. The dup then added 139 runs for the first wicket in Trinidad in the first innings and 98 in the second innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal A Big Positive For India: Deep Dasgupta

“That is a big, big positive. The way he batted, he (Yashasvi Jaiswal) looked comfortable. But again, he will face a lot sterner challenges going forward in this format” Deep Dasgupta said to ESPN Cricinfo.

The former Indian wicket-keeper said that the series against South Africa will be a huge challenge for Jaiswal. However, in his opinion, the youngster is ready to play Test cricket for India.

“The next series itself is going to be a huge challenge against South Africa. But I think what we have seen so far, it seems like he is comfortable and he is ready for this level. He is only going to get better. This was his first outing and he looked so good” Dasgupta added further.

India now play a three-match ODI series starting with the first ODI in Barbados on July 27. The series then concludes with a five-match T20I series. West Indies recently failed to qualify for the ICC World Cup 2023 and thus this series will be about regrouping as an ODI outfit.
