England wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt said that Team India’s fearless style in T20I cricket has now set the standard for teams around the world. Salt said that England’s 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final win over India was the outcome of years of effort, calling it one of their most complete batting performances.
India have been in impressive form since winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies. The Suryakumar Yadav-led team hasn’t lost a single T20I series and is at the top of the ICC rankings. With their form and consistency, India are seen as the front-runners for the 2026 T20 World Cup on home soil.
We Were Absolutely the Trendsetters - Phil Salt
Phil Salt said that India have transformed into one of the strongest T20 sides in the world. Salt mentioned that England had been setting the tone in global T20 cricket in the past. He added that India have now taken it to another level.
“In the World Cup semi-final we won in Australia against India, we were absolutely the trendsetters in the global game, and had been for a few years. The way we played that night was incredible,” said Phil Salt on the RCB Podcast.
"I was batting at three and didn’t even get in because Alex Hales and Jos Buttler were brutal at the top. They played with such a carefree approach—there was no stopping us that night. That performance was the product of many years of working in the right direction," he added.
India Have Made the Switch and Are Now the Trendsetters - Phil Salt
Phil Salt said that India looked almost unbeatable in the semi-final in Guyana during the T20 World Cup 2024. The wicketkeeper-batter hoped that England could climb back to the top again in the near future.
“But since then, I feel India have made the switch and are now the trendsetters in the global game, leading the pack. That World Cup semi-final in Guyana showed it again," Salt stated.
"On that day, especially at that venue, they would have taken some serious beating. The landscape is always changing, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future we’ll be back on top,” he continued.

India are at the top of the team rankings in the shorter international format. They have shown consistency across series and tournaments. The Men in Blue are in the final stages of their preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup at home.
India will face South Africa in a five-match series, starting on December 9 in Cuttack. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team, with Shubman Gill serving as vice-captain.
The upcoming World Cup will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. India have been placed in a group with Pakistan, the USA, the Netherlands, and Namibia.
