India captain Rohit Sharma heaped praise on the bowlers for their sensational display against England in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday (October 29).
Batting first for the first time in the tournament, India were off to a disastrous start. The Men in Blue lost three wickets for just 40 runs before a 91-run stand between Rohit Sharma (87) and KL Rahul (39) steadied the ship. When both the batsmen departed, India were reeling at 164 for 5. A 49-run stand from Suryakumar Yadav then guided the team to a 200-plus total. India eventually finished their innings on 229 for 9.
England were not in the best of form coming into this game but not many were expecting the reigning world champions to have much problem in chasing down the modest total. However, England ended up losing the game by 100 runs. They remained on the backfoot right from the word go during the chase and were eventually bowled out for 129 runs.
Rohit Sharma hails India’s bowlers:
India’s pacers were the destructor-in-chief as Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah picked up 4 and 3 wickets respectively. On the other hand, spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja combined to take the remaining three wickets. Speaking at the end of the game, captain Rohit Sharma was all praise for India’s bowling performance.
“It’s not something you see everyday. When you start your innings, you have to somehow try and get a couple of wickets to put the pressure back on the opposition. With the experience that our seamers have now, you can always rely and bank on them to get those crucial breakthroughs. That’s exactly what our seamers did. They exploited the conditions pretty well. There was swing, there was lateral a bit of lateral movement as well. They put the ball in the right areas to create that doubt in the batters’ mind,” said Rohit Sharma.
He was further asked whether India have the best bowling attack in the competition. In reply, Rohit said that he believes the Men in Blue have the strongest attack, saying:
“I think so. We have a good balance, couple of good spinners, and the seamers have a lot of experience playing in these conditions. There’s a fair bit of options and experience as well. It’s very important that the batters put runs on the board, give them something to work with and then rely on them to do the magic.”
India will be in action next on November 2 when they take on Sri Lanka in their seventh match of the competition.
