India Bowling Coach:
Former South Africa fast-bowler Morne Morkel is the India bowling coach. The BCCI appointed him as the bowling coach in August 2024, a month after Gautam Gambhir was named the head coach. Before Morkel, former India pacer Paras Mhambrey was the India bowling coach.
Morkel's name was recommended by Gambhir himself. Gambhir and Morkel played together for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL before working together as the backroom staff for Lucknow Super Giants and Durban Super Giants in the SA20.
Morne Morkel Coaching Career:
Before becoming India bowling coach, Morkel worked as the bowling coach for several teams. In the IPL, he plied his trade as the bowling coach for Lucknow Super Giants. He was also the coach for Durban Super Giants in South Africa.
In international cricket, Morkel briefly served as the bowling coach of Pakistan. In the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup, he worked with New Zealand and also plied his trade for Namibia at the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup before becoming Team India's bowling coach.
Morne Morkel Playing Career:
Morne Morkel enjoyed a successful career in international cricket, especially in Test. He was a key member of the South African team that dominated the longest format of the game in the late 2000s and early 2010s. He represented the Proteas at the highest stage of the game from 2006 and 2018.
A right-arm lanky pacer, Morkel was a key part of South Africa's most potent pace pack that also had the legendary Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander. At the time of his retirement, Morkel was the fifth-highest wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests.
He made his Test debut against India in 2006 and went on to represent his country in 86 Tests. The former bowler picked up an impressive 309 wickets in his illustrious career, including a career-best 6/23 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2012.
Morkel also made a big impact in the limited-overs cricket. He represented South Africa in 117 ODIs and picked up 188 wickets including two five-wicket hauls. In T20Is, Morkel picked up 47 wickets from 44 games.
Apart from playing international cricket, Morkel also plied his trade for different teams around the world. He played in the IPL, Caribbean Premier League, T20 Blast, Big Bash League, and now-defunct Mzansi Super League.
