Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has hit back at Ricky Ponting over his prediction for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. During an episode of The ICC Review, Ponting predicted that Australia will beat India 3-1 in the series and will regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

But Ravi Shastri has other ideas and has backed India to win the series and continue their dominance on Australian soil. India have won the series on their last two tours of Australia. The Men in Blue have been winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the last four occasions, two home and two away.

Ravi Shastri hits back at Ricky Ponting's 3-1 prediction

During an episode of The ICC Review, Ravi Shastri reminded everyone that India have been winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since the last couple of occasions on Australian soil. He also reminded Australia that they have not lifted the trophy in almost a decade now.

"The Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia over five Test matches is going to be a humdinger. Remember, India have beaten Australia twice on the last two tours and Australia have not had a hand on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in almost a decade and that's the reason why everyone will be waiting for these two heavyweights of Test match cricket over the last five to eight years to go head-to-head," Shastri stated.

Shastri further added that India have all of their fast bowlers fit and if they can produce a good performance with the bat, they can make it a hat-trick of Test series wins on Australian soil.

The five-match Test series between Australia and India will begin on November 22, 2024, in Perth. The second Test in Adelaide will be a day-night Test match in Adelaide. The last Test of the grueling series will be played in Sydney from June 3, 2025.

India's previous record at Border-Gavaskar Trophy

In the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in Australia, a spirited India defeated an experienced Australia 2-1. India struggled with injuries throughout the series but the players never lost hope and shocked the home side. Ravi Shastri was India's head coach at that time.

In the last match of the series, India ended Australia's 32-year winning streak at the Gabba to seal the series. It was a memorable series win in Indian cricket history as they have often struggled to win on Australian soil.

Thrilling Test cricket expected between India and Australia

It is expected to be a thrilling series between two of the best teams in the World Test Championship (WTC) right now. While India is on the top of the rankings with a win percentage of 68.52, Australia are second with a win percentage of 62.50.

Both teams have been the best Test teams for the past few years. In the last WTC cycle, India and Australia qualified for the final with Australia emerging victorious at The Oval, London. Both are in a comfortable position in the WTC rankings currently and will be aiming to solidify their positions further.
