Former cricketer Aakash Chopra feels that young wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan deserves to be part of India’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 at home. Aakash Chopra isn’t sure whether Ishan Kishan can be a front-runner as the backup opener in the squad for the marquee event.

The upcoming edition of the World Cup will be hosted by India from October 5 to November 18 later this year. Shikhar Dhawan and Ishan Kishan will compete for the third opener’s role in the squad. Dhawan was one of the best performers for the Men in Blue in 50-over ICC events.

Rohit Sharma And Shubman Gill Will Open – Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted that Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma will be first choice openers for India.

“There is another left-hander. His name is Ishan Kishan. Prima facie, it seems like he is an obvious choice because you have to keep three openers – so Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan is a frontrunner logically, but is he a frontrunner?”

“Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will open and Ishan Kishan can be your backup opener. From a discussion point of view, it is absolutely right – he has scored an ODI double century, he pulls his weight into the side whenever given a chance, so his name should be there.”

The 25-year-old represented India in 14 matches and scored 510 runs with an average of 42.5. The left-handed batter smashed a faster double hundred in the ODI, scoring 210 runs against Bangladesh.

It Will Be Sanju Samson Ahead Of Ishan Kishan In India Squad – Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator said that KL Rahul will be the first-choice wicketkeeper in the squad and added that Sanju Samson can serve as a backup for him.

“The twist in the tale will come because of who the keeper in the team is as he is the second wicketkeeper as well. I feel Ishan Kishan’s place is not dependent at all on what he is doing. It’s dependent on the team’s balance – that who will be the keeper in the team and whether he can be the keeper in his place.”

“Your second wicketkeeper should bat at the same position as your first wicketkeeper. If KL Rahul gets fit, he could be the first wicketkeeper because you need someone in the middle order. If KL Rahul doesn’t get fit, it will be Sanju Samson, or you can look at Jitesh Sharma as an absolute out-of-the-box option.”

Sanju Samson scored 330 runs in 11 ODI matches with an impressive average of 66 and a strike rate of 104.76. The right-handed batter smashed two half-centuries in his brief career, with a best score of 86.
