Former Indian fast bowler Ashish Nehra hailed Axar Patel for his excellent performance and for making full use of the opportunity that he got in the second Test at Chennai. R Ashwin was the stand-out performer and deservedly got the man of the match award in the second test for his heroics with both bat and ball. Ashwin picked a fifer in the first innings and backed it up with a remarkable century in the second innings to help India win the Test and level the series 1-1.

Axar Patel had an excellent debut as he became the ninth Indian bowler to take a fifer on debut. He picked up 7 wickets overall in the match and provided the much need support from the other end for Ashwin. He missed out on the first test due to injury but made up for it with some extraordinary bowling in the second test. His consistent line and lengths with some help from the pitch and variation of speeds made him unplayable for the England batsman.

Ashish Nehra Impressed By Axar’s Consistency

Ashish Nehra was impressed by the way Axar bowled in the second test and admitted that Axar did not do the same mistake that Shahbaz Nadeem did in the first test. He added the importance of bowling well consistently and taking wickets despite the pitch helping Axar a lot.

“Axar Patel grabbed the chance that Shahbaz Nadeem let go of when he played because of Axar’s injury. But Axar Patel did not make the same mistake. We repeatedly said that the conditions were favorable for spin bowling but still, you need to bowl and take the wickets by showing the consistency,” Nehra said on Star Sports.

The Experience Of Domestic Cricket Was Clearly Evident Says Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra revealed that the experience of domestic cricket in Axar Patel had been handy on his debut and helped him to bowl at good areas consistently. He added that Ashwin was there for him to help always out if needed.

“The experience of domestic cricket was clearly evident as he did what he knows, he kept bowling at the same spot. We had discussed earlier as well that Ravichandran Ashwin was there in any case with the experience but Axar Patel can also take five wickets and he did that,” added Ashish Nehra.
