On Saturday in Chennai, England Test captain Joe Root became the first-ever batsman in Test cricket history to record a double hundred on his 100th Test. The previous best score for a batsman on his centenary Test was 184 by former Pakistan skipper, Inzamam-ul-Haq against India in 2005.

With a straight-down-the-ground six off a tired Ravichandran Ashwin, Joe Root brought moved past 200 – his 5th double ton and second in three Tests! Joe Root, on Friday, notched up his 20th Test hundred becoming only the 9th player to reach a three-digit score on his 100th Test match.

After not making a single Test ton last year, Joe Root has started 2021 with a freakish form – he has plundered three hundreds in as many Tests. After scoring a double hundred and a hundred on the raging turners in Galle against Sri Lanka, the right-hander has stamped his authority over the Indian bowlers in Chennai. His first-innings knock has also pushed his overall average over 50 in Test cricket.

England inch towards a big first-innings total on the back of Joe Root’s double ton

By Tea on Day 2, the visitors have a firm command over the match and are set for a big first-innings total at the Chepauk. At the close of the second session on the second day, England sits comfortably on the total of 454/4 with Joe Root unbeaten on 209 alongside Ollie Pope, who missed out on the Sri Lanka Test series due to a shoulder injury.

England lost the only wicket of Ben Stokes in the morning session – the left-hander batted with alacrity for his knock of 82 runs from 118 balls sweeping, reverse-sweeping, and slogging the Indian spinners.

There is plenty of time left in the match; England will be looking to post a massive total on the scoreboard in their first innings and bat India out of the game.

While Virat Kohli and the rest of the hosts’ batsmen will be itching to come to bat on what has been a good batting pitch, however, there have been some balls that spat up and took the dust out with it, which are alarming side for the Indian team who may have to chase a target in the fourth innings.
