England Test captain and batting mainstay, Joe Root is all but confirmed to miss the 3-match ODI series against India. The ongoing 4-match Test series will be followed by 5 T20Is, of which Root is not a part of the England squad.

The T20I series will be followed by a 3-match ODI series, from March 23 and all the matches will be played in Pune.

According to a report in Daily Mail, since Root is not part of the T20I series, which is sandwiched between the Test and the ODI rubbers, the ECB feels that it would be wise to rest him from the 50-over matches against India and have him return back home early.

Joe Root opts out of the IPL 2021 Auction

While the right-hander has expressed his desire to play in the IPL, however, he has opted out of the IPL 2021 auction – and hence the IPL in India – owing to the busy cricketing schedule of the England team where the Three Lions are expected to play 17 Tests, 12 ODIs, and over 20 T20Is. Joe Root will also be a big part of ECB’s The Hundred.

“At some point of my career, I am desperate to be a part of an IPL season. Hopefully, a few more beyond that as well. It is something I would love to experience, and love to be a part of. With the amount of international cricket and Test cricket, in particular, this year, didn’t feel like it was the right time (to enter the IPL auction).

I didn’t feel like I could throw in all my energy into it, which it deserves. Hopefully, next year, there’s more of an opportunity to potentially be part of the IPL or at least be in the auction,” he had said in a virtual press conference.

While the 30-year-old continues to be a key part of the England team in ODI cricket, however, he has been dropped from the T20 side since the 2019 World Cup – Eoin Morgan has chosen to bolster his team with power-players banishing the stability of Joe Root.

Meanwhile, the ongoing Test series stands level at 1-1 after two Test; England needs to win a remaining couple of matches to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
