Former India wicket-keeper, Kiran More feels that India missed the variety of Kuldeep Yadav in the first Test match against England which the hosts lost.

Kiran More opines that Kuldeep has a knack for picking wickets at any stage of the game – something India could have used when Joe Root and the English batsman were on their way to put up a massive first innings total.

India fielded three off-spinners in R Ashwin, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Nadeem. It came as a surprise when Kuldeep, the chinaman who hasn’t played a Test since picking a fifer in Sydney two years ago, was dropped in favour of two inexperienced spinners.

“He is a guy who has got some different varieties. And he is hungry. If you give him an opportunity, he will bowl well. Nadeem was struggling. He has not played cricket for a long time and coming into a Test match straightaway after the pandemic is not easy,” Kiran More told Sportskeeda.

“Kuldeep has done well in Test cricket. He has the variety, which helps to win a Test match. Sundar has good control. But Kuldeep is someone who can get you wickets anytime. He can take a five-wicket haul and win a match for you,” the 58-year-old added.

Kuldeep should come in for the second Test but would be harsh to drop Sundar: Kiran More

Kiran More reckons Kuldeep Yadav should definitely come into the eleven for the second Test match which begins on 13th February at the same venue. Kiran More also feels it would be a bit harsh to drop Sundar after his brilliant performances with bat and ball in Brisbane, and then an unbeaten 85 in Chennai.

Kiran More points out that in Sundar and Nadeem India played two very inexperienced spinners – both the youngsters were fetched for runs by England in the first innings after they carefully saw off India’s first line of attack.

“We need to see how Kuldeep Yadav can fit in. Washington Sundar definitely gives us batting strength. But, with two off-spinners, things become very easy for the opposition. I think Ravichandran Ashwin’s line and length and Sundar’s line and length are slightly different.

“It will be harsh to drop Sundar. But sometimes you have to play the right combination to win a Test match. So, the think tank will have to decide how to go about it. And Kuldeep (Yadav) will give a different combination, different ideas for the captain, and also give something to think for the England batters,” the former keeper further added.
