After two days of clear and bright weather at Lord’s, all eyes are now on the forecast for Day 3 of the third Test match between India and England on Saturday, July 12. With the match evenly poised, there's intrigue about whether the weather might play a role on the third day at the iconic venue in London.
England posted a total of 387 in their first innings, with Joe Root scoring his eighth Test century at Lord’s. Jasprit Bumrah was the best bowler for India, finishing with a five-wicket haul. At stumps on Day 2, the Shubman Gill-led team reached 145 for 3, with KL Rahul (53) and Rishabh Pant (19) at the crease.
Jasprit Bumrah Unplayable with Second New Ball on Day 2 Morning
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational opening spell on Day 2. He picked up three wickets in the first half hour to put England on the back foot. However, the visitors missed a crucial opportunity when KL Rahul dropped Jamie Smith on 5 in the slips, and it proved costly.
Smith capitalized on the reprieve, scoring 51 runs off 56 balls. He added an 84-run partnership with Brydon Carse for the eighth wicket. Akash Deep and Dhruv Jurel missed tough chances to dismiss Carse, who scored 56 before falling to Mohammed Siraj.
England ended their innings at 387 runs. Bumrah took 5 for 74 in 27 overs. Notably, it marked his fourth five-wicket haul in England - the most by any Indian bowler in the country.
In-Form Shubman Gill Falls Cheaply for 16 on Day 2
The visitors suffered an early setback in their first innings as Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 13 in just the second over. Karun Nair and KL Rahul negotiated the English bowling attack.
Nair once again failed to convert his start into a big score. He perished for 40 off 62 balls, leaving India at 74 for 2.
Shubman Gill joined Rahul at the crease and added 33 runs for the third wicket. However, Gill’s dismissal added responsibility on KL Rahul and the middle order to steady the innings.
Rahul showcased his solid defensive game and punished overpitched deliveries with elegant cover drives. Notably, he scored a century during India’s win at Lord’s in 2021. He has also recorded 137 at Headingley and 55 in the series opener at Edgbaston.
Rishabh Pant, who didn’t keep wickets on Day 2, came out to bat before stumps. At the end of the day, India were 145 for 3, still trailing England by 242 runs.
