The first Test between India and England at Headingley is evenly poised, with all three outcomes (India win, England win, or draw) still possible after four competitive days. However, weather could play spoilsport, as rain interruptions may affect the result of the opening game of the five-match Test series.
At the end of Day 4 in the first Test at Headingley on Monday, England were 20 without loss in their second innings. They need 350 more on the final day to secure victory, while India need ten wickets. India posted scores of 471 and 364 in their two innings, while England managed 471 in their first innings.
Day 5 Weather Forecast for India vs England 1st Test at Headingley
According to the UK’s MET Office, there is an 80% chance of rain after 11:00 AM local time (3:30 PM IST), with more than a 60% chance of showers throughout the day.
AccuWeather also predicts a 60% chance of rain around the scheduled start time, and the showers are expected to ease as the day progresses. A brief spell of rain is also likely around 2 PM, but the skies could clear afterward.
If the rain stays away, conditions will be favorable for bowlers. Temperatures are expected to range between 15°C and 21°C, with overcast skies and high humidity (87%). Winds from the southwest will blow at 17 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 48 km/h, and around 1.1 mm of rain is forecast.
India Lost the Last Six Wickets for Just 31 Runs in the Second Innings
India resumed Day 4 of the Leeds Test at 90/2 but suffered an early setback as captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 8. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant put together a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Pant became only the second wicketkeeper-batter to score hundreds in both innings of a Test, after Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower in 2001. He was dismissed for 118 runs off 140 balls, including 15 fours and three sixes, by Shoaib Bashir. Rahul scored 137 runs off 247 deliveries, including 18 fours.
Rahul's dismissal left India at 333/5. However, India then lost their last six wickets for just 31 runs. Karun Nair (20), Shardul Thakur (4), Mohammed Siraj (0), Jasprit Bumrah (0), and Prasidh Krishna (0) fell in quick succession. Josh Tongue picked up three wickets in four deliveries.
England Eye Victory to Take 1-0 Lead in Test Series
The hosts will aim for a win to take 1-0 lead in the series. They are confident in their ability to chase down tough targets, something they've focused on mastering in recent seasons under Ben Stokes' leadership. India, meanwhile, will rely on Jasprit Bumrah to bowl England out quickly and seal victory.
After the conclusion of Day 4, KL Rahul said that Indian bowlers need to maintain a straight line, avoid conceding easy boundaries, and force England’s batters to work hard for every run.
"We need to keep that in the back of our heads and try and bowl as straight as we can. Try and be patient and really not give them those boundaries, make them earn their runs. It should be a very interesting day," Rahul said.
