The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked the squad to travel to Sri Lanka for the limited-overs matches to assemble in Mumbai on June 14. The players will be placed in isolation for a two-week period.

Since most of the first-choice players are in England for the Test assignment – the WTC final against New Zealand followed by the Test series with England – the selectors have announced a second-string squad to take on Sri Lanka in 3 ODIs and as many T20Is, starting July 13 in Colombo.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan has been named as the captain and pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is appointed as the vice-captain. Several youngsters are selected in the 20-man squad, and as many as 5 players – Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Rana, K Gowtham, and Chetan Sakariya – have received maiden call-ups to the national team.

Team India’s itinerary for the Sri Lanka tour:

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the players have been asked to undergo Covid-19 RT-PCR tests before they reach Mumbai hotel by June 14. They will then leave for Sri Lanka on June 28.

Upon arriving on the Island, the visitors will be required to undergo another three days in quarantine in their hotel rooms. Post completion of the 3-day isolation, the players will be allowed to train in small groups, as per the guidelines issued by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

On Friday, the SLC issued a media release revealing the Indian squad would train in smaller groups between July 2-4. Between July 6 and 12, the entire squad will be free to train before the ODI series.

The ODI series will be followed by the T20Is series, concluding on July 25, and the Indian squad would return home on July 26. This is India’s first tour to Sri Lanka since the Nidahas Trophy – tri-series with the hosts and Bangladesh – in 2018, which India won under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

As far as the Indian team in England is concerned, Virat Kohli and co., in Southampton, has started training and playing an intra-squad match to prepare for the marquee clash from June 18. After a month’s gap, they will take on Joe Root’s side in a 5-Test series from August 4.
