The 2021 season of the Indian Premier League [IPL] is less than two months away but before that, a mini-auction will be conducted in Chennai on February 18.
The eight franchises have already announced their respective retention list and in the process have released a plethora of marquee players.
Thus, in the upcoming auction, there will be a lot of superstars who will be vying for a new franchise and that includes three former captains.
Here’s a look at three former IPL auctions that will go under the hammer, come February 18.
Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell, who led Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2017, returned to the KL Rahul-led franchise last year after he was picked for a whopping Rs 10.75 crores in the 2019 auctions.
However, the Australian swashbuckler turned out to be a colossal failure as he managed a mere 108 runs in 13 games at an average of 15.42 and a strike-rate of 101.88.
As a result, Maxwell was released by the franchise ahead of the auction and he will be on the lookout for a new team, come February 18.
Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh bid adieu to the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings following the expiration of his contract.
Harbhajan, who has led the Mumbai Indians in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, was picked by CSK in the 2018 auction.
He featured for the ‘Yellow Army’ in the 2018 and 2019 season but backed out from the last edition citing personal reasons.
Even though he has called off his association with CSK, Harbhajan has made himself available for the 2021 season and he will be back on the auction table, come February 18.
Steve Smith
Steve Smith endured a forgettable season with both bat as well as a leader last year, eventually leading to Rajasthan Royals finishing with a wooden spoon. Smith managed just 311 games in 14 outings at an average of 25.91 and a strike-rate of 131.22.
As a result, Smith, who has previously led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals, will be back on the auction table this year.
