Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell recently shared his experience when he found out that he was snapped up in the 2013 auction for 1 million by Mumbai Indians. Maxwell will be up for grab again for the franchises after getting released by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the IPL auction. He has set his base price for 2 crores in the upcoming auction and is more likely of getting picked again despite his poor performances in the last few IPL seasons.
Apart from the 2014 season where Maxwell had a big impact on the IPL playing for Kings XI Punjab, he has struggled to get going but yet his demand hasn’t gone down at all. He played for various franchises in between but couldn’t replicate his match-winning knocks his heroics. The IPL auction for the 2021 year will be held on February 18 in Chennai.
“I Had No Idea, And I Sat Down” – Glenn Maxwell
Maxwell said that during the auction in 2013, he was involved in a match against West Indies and forgot totally about the auction. He returned on a first-ball duck while batting and was filthy about it while entering the dressing room. He was surprised to see the teammates laughing and he explained how his coach and captain took him to the backroom to tell him that he had gone for a million in the auction. Maxwell couldn’t believe that and told that he had no idea how to react to it.
“The auction was on game 2 of that series against West Indies, and I completely forgot about it. That’s 100% honest. Against the West Indies, I got a first-ball duck. I walked off, filthy. Was angry in the changeroom and there were a few blokes who were laughing and giggling in the background. I thought what’s going on here. I had no idea, and I sat down,” Glenn Maxwell said to ESPNCricinfo.
“Mickey Arthur and Michael Clarke grabbed me and took me to the backroom. I was like – They were going to yell at me about my performance or something like that. They were like the IPL auctions are on. I said ‘okay, I didn’t even know’. They said you went for a million. I said an expletive and sort of walked off and just sat there and I had no idea how to react. Blokes were still laughing in the background,” Glenn Maxwell added.
“A Life-Changing Amount Of Money For Me”- Maxwell
Maxwell was really happy to have gone for a large sum of money in the auction and he added that he expressed his joy to his parents who were in the crowd. He told that the amount had changed his life totally and told that he was lucky enough to get it.
“I was really lucky; it was in Perth, I had my family over. My mum and dad were in the crowd, along with my uncle and aunty. Shared a special moment with them after the game. That was the memory of that day. That was a life-changing amount of money for me,” Glenn Maxwell said.
Glenn Maxwell can be used as a floater in the batting order and on his day, he can win games on his own with his striking abilities.
