Axar Patel did a nice job while delivering the super over for Delhi Capitals in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2021. Patel just gave 7 runs in the over to provide an excellent chance to his team to win the match.

Delhi Capitals won the match after getting the required 8 runs off Rashid Khan’s over. Post the match, Axar Patel revealed that he himself told skipper Rishabh Pant that he should bowl the super over.

Batting first, Delhi Capitals scored 159-4 in a tough-batting pitch at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Prithvi Shaw (53) scored a fifty while Rishabh Pant scored 37 runs.

Steve Smith also contributed with unbeaten 34 runs. While chasing, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost many wickets cheaply but Kane Williamson kept the winning hopes alive with his 51-ball-66. However, the match ended in a tie.

I Thought A Spinner Would Be More Effective: Axar Patel

After the victory, Delhi Capitals’ spinner Axar Patel said that he only told Rishabh Pant that he should bowl the super over as he thought a spinner would be more effective.

“When I came out of the dressing room, coach and everyone were having a discussion over the super over. The first thought was to go with Avesh Khan because SRH will send a left-right combination.

“After that, when we were just stepping on the ground, I thought a spinner would be more effective. So I told Rishabh Pant that I can also bowl. Then he spoke to Ricky Ponting and it was decided on the last moment that I would bowl,” Axar Patel said.

Axar Patel was tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the tournament due to which he was not part of the Delhi Capitals’ first four games. Talking about returning to the field, Patel said that he told management ahead of the match that he was feeling match-fit and was ready to play.

“I was ready from my side. The team management asked me how I was feeling. I had done four sessions before coming out of the quarantine. The ball was also coming slow off the Chennai wicket. So I was asked if I could play.

“I said to them, I was ready, I am match-fit and can play. The rest is management’s decision. The management said that if you are ready, you will play straight-away, Axar Patel further said.
