Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have bagged a great record after victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first match of IPL 2021. The Eoin Morgan led-side KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (April 11). With the victory, Kolkata Knight Riders also earned 2 points in the tournament.

As a result, Kolkata Knight Riders have grabbed the 2nd spot on the points table with 1 victory. They follow Delhi Capitals- who hold the top spot on the points table after their 7-wicket magnificent win against Chennai Super Kings in the first match. Royal Challengers Bangalore follow Kolkata Knight Riders on the third spot on the points table.

Kolkata Knight Riders Join Elite Group

After defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders have bagged their 100th victory in the Indian Premier League. KRR have become the 3rd team to achieve this feat after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai Indians have won 120 matches in IPL so far while Chennai Super Kings have won 106 matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders are also the third-most successful team in IPL so far. They won the trophy in IPL 2012 and IPL 2014. With two IPL titles, they follow Chennai Super Kings- who have won 3 IPL titles so far. Mumbai Indians have won a record 5 IPL titles.

Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders batted first and scored 187-6 with half-centuries from Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi. While Nitish Rana smashed 80 runs, Rahul Tripathi scored 53. Dinesh Karthik also gave a superb finish in the batting with his 22 runs off 9 balls. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rashid Khan picked 2 wickets for 24 runs along with Nabi who also picked 2 wickets while conceding 32 runs.

While chasing, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost openers David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha cheaply as they both scored 7 and 3 runs respectively. Manish Pandey played a brilliant knock of unbeaten 61 off 44 balls but could not grab victory for his team. Jonny Bairstow smashed 55 runs off 40 balls.

In the final over, Hyderabad needed 22 runs for victory but they eventually remained short of 10 runs, finishing at 177-5. KKR’s Nitish Rana was given the player of the match award. KKR next faces Mumbai Indians on Tuesday (April 13) while Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore a day later. MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will host both matches.
