Mumbai Indians’ Bowling Coach and former New Zealand speedster, Shane Bond has heaped praise on leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, who destroyed the batting lineup of KKR in the last game. Rahul Chahar produced a match-winning spell of four wickets for 27 runs and it was a much-needed performance from him after having been on the expensive side in his first game of IPL 2021.
The 21-year old is very young still, and he has been playing an important role for Mumbai Indians, leading their spin department. His exploits against KKR helped Mumbai get two points on the board for the first time in IPL 2021 and he will be expected to continue the good performance throughout the season.
Shane Bond Impressed By Rahul Chahar’s Development:
Shane Bond lauded the efforts of Rahul Chahar in the previous game and explained the importance of him in the bowling set up to pick up wickets regularly. He told that Chahar has been very impressive and has got a bright future ahead of him if he gets the development programme going on. He added that Chahar can bowl a lot of wicket-taking deliveries and must continue to do that.
“He is doing extremely well, if you look at Rahul (Chahar), he is still incredibly young man, who has played a fair bit of cricket and now some high-pressure cricket, and (in) finals and a key member of our team, so in terms of his development, I still think he is got a long way to go,” said Shane Bond.
“We have got some outstanding strike bowlers to bowl in the power-play, Trent Boult, Booms (Jasprit Bumrah), and whoever compliments them, Krunal Pandya who is brilliant for us in the last game, probably slightly more defensive bowler. And Rahul is a wicket-taking bowler, you make him bowl those balls that are just too good,” he added
Shane Bond Explains Chahar’s Role
Shane Bond explained that Chahar thrives on the pressure created by the bowler around him and stressed that Chahar had to play the role of the wicket-taker in the team. It was the best figures for the leg spinner in his IPL career and he has been showing a lot of promise in the last two years.
“Example is just the powerful (balls he bowled) in the last game he bowled absolute jaffa, his role is to come and spin the ball and if the boys are around and create some pressure, it gives him opportunity to take those wickets, so that’s the role we look for him to do in the team,” said Shane Bond
Rahul Chahar’s next assignment will be up against SRH tonight in Chennai.
