The upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction is expected to be the last mega auction according to reports. The franchisees are also in agreement with the idea as they would like to build their squads around a certain set of players.

Each franchise will have four players they can retain and the rest will be entering the auction pool. This big reset, while providing a freshness to the league, doesn’t allow franchisees to build a certain core player group. Therefore, the stakeholders in the league are keen on doing away with the idea.

We genuinely hope this is the last mega auction because the trend has clearly gone past its sell-by date. This, in turn, will also put pressure on franchisees to pick well at this mega auction because they’ll be building their future teams around these set of players,” a source was quoted as saying to TOI.

IPL 2022 retentions to be announced today

The franchisees will be announcing their list of retained players on November 30, Tuesday. They can have a maximum of four retentions – either two Indians and two overseas or three Indians and one overseas.

After the confirmation of retentions by BCCI, the two new franchises that will be part of IPL 2022 – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will be given the opportunity to name four players who will be part of their squad. The rest will enter the pool in the mega auction, which is likely to be held this year-end or in January’s first week.
