Former India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar reckons that IPL teams with Indian coaches and Indian players are a lot happier than those who have foreign members as their leaders. Sunil Gavaskar believes that with an Indian coach and captain, communication becomes a lot easier for domestic players.

Sunil Gavaskar’s comments arrive after some young players under foreign coaches struggled in IPL 2023. On the other hand, many newcomers under an Indian coach or mentor grabbed the limelight in the tournament. Gavaskar feels that communication has played a key role in this aspect.

IPL 2023: Teams With Indian Coaches And Captains Are Happier Than Those Who Don’t- Sunil Gavaskar

In his column for Sportstar, Sunil Gavaskar shed light on his views about the benefits for teams and their players with a domestic captain and coach.

The other crucial thing is to have an Indian as the coach or skipper, for that, allows the newer, younger players to approach them easily and talk about their problems, if any, and also pick their brains on how to get better. It is quite apparent that teams that have Indian coaches and captains are a lot happier than those that don’t,” Gavaskar said.

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“There will be a minimum of seven Indian players in every playing squad, and make no mistake, however wonderful the overseas talent there may be in the team, it will invariably be the Indian skill that wins more matches,” the little master further said.

Gavaskar gave examples of leaders like Chandu Pandya (KKR coach), Ashish Nehra (GT coach), and Gautam Gambhir (LSG mentor) to justify how players flourished under them in IPL 2023 season.

“Look at the progress made by Rinku Singh under Chandu Pandit, the terrific coming back to form of Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy, and Nitish Rana growing as a captain”.

“Under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir, see how Ravi Bishnoi, Ayush Badoni, and Naveen Ul Haq are flowering, as also under Ashish Nehra and Hardik Pandya, who invariably find a new player of the match. That’s simply because communication and reach are easy for the domestic Indian players in these teams,” added Sunil Gavaskar.
