Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble made a bold claim ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction. He believes that the 20 crore mark won’t be breached because if it happens then there will be a disparity.

The IPL 2024 auction is just a day away from now. The excitement for the event has taken its toll on the fans and it’s fair to say that it will be one of the exciting things to watch out for. Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena will be host to the auction on Tuesday (19th December).

The most exciting thing about the upcoming IPL 2024 auction is that no one is aware of who will acquire whom. This time around, all the attention will be on the event because some of the big players are set to go under the hammer.

333 cricketers will be part of the auction and among those only 77 slots will be filled, which in itself depicts the kind of competition that will be on the show. The franchise owners along with think talent of all the teams will be under serious pressure.

With the likes of Mitchell Starc, Travis Head, Rachin Ravindra, Harry Brook, and others set to be part, it won’t be a surprise that some of the records will be under threat. All the teams lack balance in some sense and they would be eager to acquire the services of some big players.

Anil Kumble, however, feels that the IPL 2024 auction won’t see much higher bids. He highlighted that franchises should spend only one-third of their purse on overseas players. Speaking on Jio Cinema, he stated:

“No, I don’t think the ₹20 crore mark will be breached. This is where I feel in a squad of 25 players, where you have eight overseas players, the purse also needs to be one third for the overseas players. I think that’s something that should happen eventually.

“Otherwise, you will see a lot of disparity at the auction. I know the overseas fans won’t be happy with what I am saying, but I think it’s important that you look at that to be a benchmark.”

IPL 2024 auction: “You will see this disparity of 50%, 60% of the squad,” Anil Kumble’s take on the auction

Anil Kumble while stressing on his statement added that franchisees need to have separate purses for overseas players otherwise it will see a disparity of 50% and 60% of the squad. He added that teams to think of bridging this gap. He elaborated:

“You have a separate overseas purse, otherwise you will see this disparity of 50%, 60% of the squad where you have options for only four players. With eight India players now part of the playing XI, that will help them, especially in these smaller auctions. There will be the challenge of bridging this gap and you will invariably go to the overseas players.”

214 players from India will be in the IPL 2024 auction out of 333 cricketers. 119 will be overseas players, including two from associate nations. There will be 116 capped players on the list along with 215 uncapped, apart from the two associate nations players.
