Young Uttar Pradesh batter Sameer Rizvi has stolen the limelight in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction. The right-hander was acquired by five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the event.

Sameer Rizvi, who is touted as right-handed Suresh Raina, was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the whopping price of INR 8.4 Crore. The MS Dhoni-led side was interested in him right from the start as they opened the bid for him at his base price of 20 lakhs.

After being involved in bidding wars with Gujarat Titans and then Delhi Capitals, CSK managed to acquire his services at the rate of 8.4 crores. It’s fair to say that Chennai Super Kings would have done a full case study on him and that’s why they were keen to have him in the team.

Sameer Rizvi, who is 20 years old, has been one of the most exciting prospects in the Indian domestic circuit. He hogged the headlines when he smashed the fastest century in the inaugural edition of the UP T20 League. The right-hander caught the attention of many with his powerful knock.

Playing for Kanpur Superstars, Sameer Rizvi ended the tournament amongst the leading run-getters. He mustered 455 runs in nine innings, including two hundreds. His heroics surely would have attracted franchises and that potentially was the reason behind him getting a huge amount of money.

Not only this, he has been staggering in the domestic circuit as well. Hailing from Meerut, Sameer Rizvi was at his best during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He slammed 18 sixes in the tournament. So far in 11-game career, he has 295 runs at an average of 49.16.

Sameer Rizvi proved his worth even in the Men’s Under-23 State A tournament. He was on top of his game as he slammed 2 half-centuries and tons to go with 84 in the final of the tournament that helped Uttar Pradesh lift the title.

Abhinav Mukund ahead of the IPL 2024 auction talked about Sameer Rizvi on Jio Cinema. He revealed that one of the IPL scouts said that the batter is very much like Suresh Raina. He explained:

“One of the IPL scouts told me that he was the right handed Suresh Raina. The areas that he hits against spin are similar and many teams might go after him.”

Suresh Raina, who was also present in the discussion, mentioned that Sameer Rizvi had different intent when he bats. He highlighted that he has the same style as that of Ayush Badoni but plays with a straight bat. He added:

“Sameer Rizvi has a different intent in his batting. He would get a lot of confidence if he gets to play for an UP team. He is a Badoni-type player but plays with a straighter bat.”

With the talent he has Sameer Rizvi no doubt will be the big thing in Indian cricket. To play under MS Dhoni will be one of the biggest changing points in his career.
