Young Australia pacer Spencer Johnson hogged the headlines during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Auction. He did the rounds when he was bought by Gujarat Titans (GT) for a whopping amount of INR 10 crore.

Spencer Johnson, who had a base price of INR 50 lakhs, kept three teams in Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals interested. The Shubman Gill-led side was desperate to acquire his services and therefore they made the first and the last bid.

KKR showed interest early on but backed away. After that, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals were engaged in the bidding war for a while before the Shubman Gill-led side brought him. With him getting such a high price in auction, many wondered about him as to who is this lad.

Spencer Johnson is a young left-arm pacer from Australia who is rated quite highly in Australian cricket. The lanky fast bowler made himself a great name during the Big Bash League (BBL) last year for Brisbane Heat. He earned rich praise for his heroics from various Australian greats including Brett Lee.

Known for his raw pace, Spencer Johnson recently made his debut for Australia in the T20Is and the ODIs. He got his debut because of his performance in the Hundred League. The pacer on his maiden outing in the league bagged a figure of 3/1.

He made his T20I debut against South Africa and after that represented Australia in ODIs. In the shortest format, he has picked two wickets and in 50-over format he didn’t have a great outing but he troubled Indian batters with the raw pace.

Spencer Johnson, who can click 145 kph consistently, played 20 T20 games and has picked 17 scalps. He also has played List A cricket and has picked 6 wickets. The lanky left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson recently played in Major League Cricket (MLC 2023) for Los Angeles Knight Riders. He played three games in the tournament and bagged two wickets at an economy rate of 7.90.

Gujarat Titans surely would’ve planned to acquire him earlier and that was potentially the reason they went all out for him. The pacer is expected to play a huge role for his team next year. His career would also shape up well playing under Ashish Nehra.

With the kind of ability that he possesses, it’s fair to say that he’s likely to walk straight into the 11. Apart from the high pace, he also swings the ball early on.
