The impact player rule which was introduced in the IPL 2023 last season has had a positive response from the fans. It allows a team to substitute one player during the match after a certain amount of overs has been bowled in the first innings. The teams can give the names of five players who can be called impact substitutes and can choose one to make the substitution.

However, the rule has its disadvantages given players are not being used to their full potential after this rule has come into effect. The rule has severely impacted all-rounders who are now restricted to their dominant bases to accommodate a specialist in the required department. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer highlighted this issue in a tweet where he mentioned how this rule has affected the all-rounders in the IPL.

“I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it’s not encouraging the all-rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket,” Wasim Jaffer wrote in his tweet.

It is true that from an entertainment perspective, the impact player rule is very promising and gives opportunities to players who otherwise would be warming the bench but it has taken a toll on all-rounders who are now resorted to either batters or bowlers after this rule came into effect. Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube, and Venkatesh Iyer are some of the players that have been affected after the Impact Player rule came into effect.

These all-rounders were hardly used as a bowling option by their sides given the team had an option to include a specialist as an impact substitute. The IPL has given a stage to many young talents in India and will continue to do so but in an era where the Indian team already lacks all-rounders, there is a need to make sure that the all-round options are used to their full potential.
