The Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) has been dramatically suspended amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. This isn’t the first time the IPL has come to a halt. Back in 2021, the tournament was stopped due to the COVID-19 outbreak and only resumed months later in September.

Now, with rising cross-border hostilities, the IPL once again finds itself in an uncertain condition. As India prepares for a high-stakes Test series against England later next month, the BCCI is running out of time to finalize the dates for the IPL 2025’s return.

BCCI faces tough call ahead of England tour

Adding to the concerns, England cricketer Dawid Malan has warned that if the IPL 2025 doesn’t resume within a week, there may be no choice but to shift it to September again. The tight international calendar and ongoing intense war between India and Pakistan are making it extremely difficult for the BCCI and IPL officials to decide on the league’s fate.

Malan believes that the BCCI has to restart the tournament as soon as possible, or after the upcoming England-India Test series, to avoid logistical headaches. However, the organizers are now closely monitoring the situation, and the next few days are crucial for them to make the call.

Dawid Malan hints at IPL's UAE return if peace doesn’t prevail between India and Pakistan

Dawid Malan was quoted as saying by Al Arabiya, “If it doesn’t happen in India or Sri Lanka in a week’s time like that, I suppose they will start in September. They have a massive Test series coming up against England in a few months’ time, and the IPL has to finish before that or start after that; logistically, it is quite a headache for the organizers. I guess they have to wait and see how next week plays out in terms of the safety concerns of players and people of both countries.”

The Englishman recalled how the IPL was moved to the UAE during the COVID outbreak and made it clear that South Africa can’t be the option to stage the rest of the 16 matches due to winter conditions. He reckoned that only India and the UAE are possible options to resume the league.

Malan added, “It’s not the first time it has happened with the IPL, not in terms of severity, that has been going on between the two countries, but COVID hit back in 2020/2021, and they moved the IPL to the UAE midway through. There are options; they have played in South Africa before. Realistically, if they have to start in a week, they have to do it in India or the UAE. South Africa wouldn’t be an option, considering it will be winter there.”

According to sources, IPL franchises discussed the idea of sending overseas players and support staff to a nearby country for safety. But with no clear sign of the tournament restarting soon, they decided it was better to send everyone home for now.

Although the BCCI has asked teams to keep all players and staff ready, as the tournament could resume within a week if the situation improves.
