Former Chennai Super Kings player S Badrinath opened up about the incident when MS Dhoni lost his cool during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2008. He revealed how the keeper-batter once kicked the water bottle out of the park.
Chennai Super Kings player MS Dhoni is one of the coolest minds that have played the game of cricket. The keeper-batter is known for his calm nature, and it is one of the major reasons why he is so successful. He has often thrived under pressure situations, winning games for his team.
There hardly have been instances where MS Dhoni has lost his cool, and one among them came during the game between Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the inaugural edition of the league. The match took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in what was a low-scoring thriller.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended up with a total of just 126 for eight, with Rahul Dravid top-scoring with 47 runs off 39 balls. Albie Morkel was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with a four-wicket haul and it seemed that the Chennai Super Kings would win the game easily.
However, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru came up with a sensational effort with the ball. Opening batter Stephen Fleming took his team off to a flying start as he slammed 39-ball 44 before the home team lost a flurry of wickets to be restricted to only 111 for eight.
S Badrinath revealed that during the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru MS Dhoni lost his cool after the team lost wickets quickly. But he said that it wasn't on the field because he didn't want to show the opposition captain that he had lost his cool. Speaking to InsideSport, he explained:
"He is also a human…he has lost his cool. But that has never happened on the field. He would never let the opposition know that he had lost his cool. In this match against RCB in Chennai, we were chasing 110 odd. We lost wickets in a cluster there and we ended up losing the match."
MS Dhoni just kicked it out of the park. I was like, 'Sh*t, oh my god!' - S Badrinath
S Badrinath mentioned that after getting out MS Dhoni was walking inside the dressing room. He revealed how, on his way back, the keeper-batter smashed the water bottle out of the park.
Badrinath also said that nobody in the team couldn't make eye contact with MS Dhoni after that incident. But he mentioned that the keeper-batter didn't say anything to anyone and didn't discuss about it in the team meeting either. He elaborated:
"I got out to a lap shot against Anil Kumble. I was LBW. So, I was standing inside the dressing room, and he was coming inside, where there was a small water bottle. MS just kicked it out of the park. I was like, 'Sh*t, oh my god!'
"Nobody wants to see that. We just couldn’t make eye contact with him. We were all trying to stay away from him. But that was it. He did not say anything. There was no team meeting regarding that," he concluded.
