Punjab Kings (PBKS) star Shashank Singh expressed his desire to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the franchise in 2025. He said that he is ready to take the leadership role if given and wants to help the franchise lift its maiden title.
Shashank Singh, who was one of the biggest success stories in the IPL 2024, was one of the two players retained by Punjab Kings. The batter was the shining light for the team last year as he displayed magnificent effort with the bat throughout the tournament.
Shashank Singh was picked accidentally by Punjab Kings in the auction
Shashank Singh, who was picked accidentally by Punjab Kings in the auction, turned out to be the biggest match-winner for the team. He was retained by the franchise for INR 5.5 crore along with Prabhsimran Singh (Rs 4 crore) as New head coach Ricky Ponting wanted a fresh set of players.
Shashank Singh scored 354 runs at an average of 44.25 from 14 innings in IPL 2024 for Punjab Kings. He scored runs at a strike rate of 164.65 and has two fifties to his name. He would be hoping to carry on the same form next year and repay the faith of management
I feel that I have the ability to lead a side and win a championship - Shashank Singh
In an interview with News 18, he was asked about leading the Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. He said that he didn't have any idea about it but claimed that he has a fair amount of captaincy experience. He believes that he can lead and win the Championship. He explained:
"Honestly, I don’t know much about it. I have been leading in the DY Patil T20 tournament for five years and touchwood, I’m doing good so far. Even for Chhattisgarh, if the management considers me capable of leading the side, I would accept it happily. I feel that I have the ability to lead a side and win a championship."
If Punjab Kings want to try me as captain, I will grab that opportunity with both hands - Shashank Singh
Shashank Singh further made a bold statement, saying that if given the opportunity, he would be taking it with both hands. He said that although he isn't expecting anything, he said that his responsibility doesn't change at all as he wants to help a team win. He elaborated:
"Similarly, if Punjab Kings want to try me as captain, I will grab that opportunity with both hands and make proper use of it. I will be grateful, but I am not expecting anything.
"However, the responsibility on my shoulder doesn’t change at all. Be it an uncapped player last year or an uncapped retention now, the job is to go out and give my 110% and make the team win."
Punjab Kings will be looking to build a strong squad going into the IPL 2025 auction. They also would be looking to add some captaincy options to the team. They have the biggest purse, and it is likely that one of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul might play for them.
