IPL chairman demands Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India debut, sends message to Ajit Agarkar

Arun Dhumal, chairman of the Indian Premier League, urged chief selector Ajit Agarkar to pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the India national cricket team. Dhumal said that Sooryavanshi deserves to break Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record as the youngest Indian international debutant.
Sooryavanshi delivered an outstanding batting performance for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Guwahati on Friday, April 10. The left-handed batter’s dominance prompted senior cricket officials to discuss his immediate inclusion in the senior national squad.
Arun Dhumal Wants Vaibhav Sooryavanshi In India Squad
Arun Dhumal expressed strong admiration for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following his recent explosive batting performance in Guwahati. The IPL chairman took to social media to say that Sooryavanshi could become the youngest debutant in Indian cricket history.
"What an amazing batting display by Vaibhav Suryavanshi this @IPL 2026 season. This prodigy certainly deserves to debut for Team India @BCCI as the youngest given his performances,” Dhumal wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“It’s rare you get a chance to pick up someone so talented and sooooo young too. Certainly deserves his name to be recorded as the youngest debutant for India,” he added.

Sachin Tendulkar made his international cricket debut at 16 years and 205 days. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned 15 on March 27. Under International Cricket Council rules, Sooryavanshi is eligible to represent the India national cricket team.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Destroys Royal Challengers Bengaluru Bowlers
Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a strong total of 201 for loss of eight wickets. Rajat Patidar scored 63 runs following the batting collapse. Rajasthan Royals chased the target successfully at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, securing a six-wicket victory within 18 overs.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed 78 runs from just 26 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes. He took apart the RCB attack, especially targeting Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the powerplay overs.
Sooryavanshi faced only four balls from Hazlewood, hitting three fours and a six. Krunal Pandya dismissed him after Virat Kohli took the catch near the boundary. Dhruv Jurel stayed unbeaten on 81 to guide Rajasthan Royals to victory.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Leads Orange Cap Race
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi currently holds the prestigious Orange Cap. The left-handed batter has scored 200 runs across four matches for Rajasthan Royals at an average of 50 and an impressive strike rate of 266.66.
Sooryavanshi is ahead of his Rajasthan Royals teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel on the run-scoring charts. He also played an exceptional innings in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup final, smashing 175 runs from just 80 balls.
Ajit Agarkar and the national selection committee may consider Sooryavanshi for the upcoming T20 Internationals against Zimbabwe or Ireland. Abhishek Sharma previously made his T20I debut after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup following strong domestic performances.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) often sends second-string squads for tours like Zimbabwe. The upcoming Asian Games in Japan also offer a valuable opportunity for Agarkar to test Sooryavanshi before including him in the main squad.
