Former seam-bowling all-rounder Irfan Pathan took a dig at the Indian team management after mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was finally included in the playing 11 for the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Varun Chakravarthy first earned a call-up to the Indian T20 team for the tour of Australia last year following a brilliant performance in the 13th season of the IPL in the United Arab Emirates.

However, he was eventually ruled out of the tour due to a shoulder injury.

Chakravarthy’s fitness issues have been the talking point thus far.

He was once again named in the Indian squad for the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year but was eventually left out after he failed to pass the fitness test twice at the National Cricket Academy.

The Tamil Nadu spinner was picked in the Indian squad for the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka and while he did not get an opportunity in the 50-over series, he has finally earned his maiden cap in the first T20I.

Following the selection of Varun Chakravarthy in the playing 11 for the 1st T20I, Irfan Pathan took to his official Twitter account where he took a subtle dig at the Indian team management besides congratulating the mystery spinner for earning his maiden India cap.

“Good luck #VarunChakravarthy for making India t20 debut. You gotta love the current Indian cricketing  SYSTEM which allowed him to come back even after few fitness attempts. Go well” wrote Irfan Pathan.

The selection of Varun Chakravarthy comes at a crucial time for both him and Team India as they aim to zero in on their first-choice spin-bowling reserves for the T20 World Cup.

India has struggled in the spin department in the past 12-15 months with Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav young off the boil.

The three-match T20I series is a perfect opportunity for Varun to showcase his credentials and push his case for the upcoming quadrennial event which will take place in a country, where he did really well last year in the IPL.
