Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev has backed the national team despite a crushing loss in the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton. Virat Kohli did not have the most desired start to the English sojourn as he was unsuccessful in capturing the ICC World Test Championship, with the Kiwis coming on top comfortably. Kapil Dev underlined that India reaching the semi-finals or finals in the last few years is a massive achievement in itself.

The Indian team has not won an ICC event since 2013 and has frequently choked in the knockouts or final ever since. New Zealand has arguably been the bogey side for them as the men in blue succumbed to them in the WTC final for the second consecutive time. The Kiwis stunned them in the 2019 World Cup semi-final when they defended a modest total against a star-studded Indian batting unit. Furthermore, Virat Kohli has failed to deliver as per expectations in the knockout games.

Kapil Dev reminded that India reaching the final or semi-final is no less and the fans criticize too early. The Haryana Hurricane observed that one cannot win the trophy every time and it’s naive to say the Indian side is not capable of handling pressure after losing only one game.

“We always reach the semi-finals or final, is it any less? We criticise too early. It is not possible that you will win the trophy every time. Look at how good they (Team India) played, after losing only one match like final or semi-final should we say that we cannot handle the pressure,” Dev told India Today.

That was their day and they played better: Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev further stated that New Zealand had a better day as they came out on top by performing with more discipline. But the World Cup-winning skipper does not doubt India’s capability under pressure as he highlighted they have won plenty of games with their backs to the walls.

“It does not happen like that. That was their day and they played better. We see it too critically, if one performance goes bad then the media flashes it a hundred times. Under a similar pressure situation, we and the current lot have won many matches,” he added.
