England middle-order batsman Sam Billings has said that there is a huge competition for places in his new franchise Delhi Capitals, admitting that game-time might be limited for him in IPL 2021.

Billings will return to his former franchise for the first time since 2018 after he was picked up for Rs 2 Crore (his base price) in the recent auction.

Delhi Capitals already have the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith as far as overseas players are concerned and while Sam Billings admits that it will be tough for him to make it to the playing 11 on a consistent basis, he is looking forward to making the most of every opportunity that comes his way in order to further his case for selection in England’s T20 World Cup squad.

“You look at the squad that Delhi has, and especially the overseas options: you could go with any combination and it would be a successful one. The competition for places is phenomenal: they obviously got to the final last year, so game time might be limited, but it comes back to the point of preparing for a World Cup and giving myself the best chance in these conditions to prepare for that,” Sam Billings was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Billings is also looking forward to batting against the England Test team’s chief tormentors in Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel in the nets.

“Facing those two spinners in the nets is one of the great things about the IPL, and other franchise competitions. If you face these guys day in, day out in testing conditions, you’re going to get better — it’s impossible not to. That’s a huge plus point… I’ll be writing a few notes about a few different cricketers that I see about,” said Billings.

As far as preparations for the T20 World Cup is concerned, Sam Billings reckons that playing in the IPL is a perfect dress-rehearsal for the quadrennial event.

“Fingers crossed, it’ll be perfect preparation. It’s really exciting, cricket coming up. I like to work on the next thing and really focus my energy on this series before we move onto the next one, but the big picture for me, the strategy was always to give myself the best chance of being selected in the World Cup at the end of the year,” added Sam Billings.

The 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League will take place across six cities- Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai- between April 09-May 30.
