Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman has reckoned that the Virat Kohli-led Team India has fielded a balanced outfit for the first One-day Internationals, a team that he feels can not only challenge but beat world champions England.

India have handed maiden ODI caps to Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna and spin-bowling all-rounder Krunal Pandya for the first match against England while the likes of Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, Rishabh Pant, and Suryakumar Yadav have been benched.

As far as the spin-bowling department is concerned, India has gone with Kuldeep Yadav over out-of-form leggie Yuzvendra Chahal while KL Rahul has been given the wicketkeeping duties.

The top-5 consists of the tried-and-tested players like Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, captain Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

Speaking on Star Sports, VVS Laxman reckoned that the Indian playing 11 is a good mixture of youth and experience.

”Yes, India can challenge the world champions with this line-up. There is a lot of experience and exuberance in that batting line-up,” said VVS Laxman

“They have experience in form of Dhawan, Rohit, Virat, KL Rahul. Opportunity for Krunal Pandya,” he added. In the bowling line-up, there is also good balance, and also variety. There is Kuldeep Yadav, who can show, who would be looking to make an impact. Prasidh Krishna, what a great opportunity for him to represent the country. Truly, truly a future star for our country,” he further said.”

”It’s a good balance. It’s just about posting at least 50 runs more than the par score, and then you can put pressure on England,” Laxman signed off.

Meanwhile, Team India Captain Virat Kohli has once lost the toss and the home side is batting first. The openers made a sedate but steady start to the innings, having accumulated 64 runs before Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Ben Stokes for a 42-ball 28.
