Former Australia opener David Warner has shared his viewpoint on Jake Fraser-McGurk's Test career. Warner played his last international match just a few days ago when Australia was defeated by India in the last Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

As a result, Australia couldn't secure its qualification for the semi-finals and bowed out of the tournament. Warner scored 178 runs in the tournament and finished as the second-highest run-scorer for Australia behind Travis Head.

With Warner retiring, dashing opener Jake Fraser-McGurk is seen as his replacement at the top, especially in white-ball formats. Both Warner and Fraser-McGurk are naturally aggressive players who like to take on the bowlers and be aggressive in the powerplay.

David Warner shares views on Jake Fraser-McGurk's prospects of Test debut

While Fraser-McGurk is likely to get a fair amount of chances in ODI and T20I cricket, it is not yet clear when he will make his Test debut. Warner advised the youngster to focus on scoring runs and not read too much social media stuff.

“Times have changed from when I first started with all these social media things, so hopefully doesn’t read too much into that, just sticks to what he knows best – that’s scoring runs, and that’s the biggest currency you can (have) is score runs," Warner advised the youngster as quoted by cricket.com.au.

The legendary opener also spoke about Fraser-McGurk's prospects of playing Test cricket. He reckoned that the youngster would have to score big runs to get the Baggy Green.

“Will he play Test cricket? I think he’ll have to have a breakout year in the next 12-18 months to prove himself. I think we’ve all had to score hundreds to get your name up there (to) warrant that,” he said.

David Warner also mentioned that Jake Fraser-McGurk has the potential to succeed in white-ball-formats but he will have to learn to play the ODI format as he did years ago.

“He can lock it in. And a bit like myself, you (have to learn) how to play … 50 over cricket. That’s one thing that I learned from Twenty20. I got dropped after seven games because I didn’t really understand how to play the game of one-day cricket,” Warner remembered the time when he was dropped after poor initial returns in the ODI format.

“So from a one-day perspective if he learns that and understands that he’ll have a fantastic career, especially batting in Australia. Best wickets in the world,” the left-handed opener added.

Both David Warner and Jake Fraser-McGurk were part of the Delhi Capitals squad for IPL 2024. Warner didn't have a great season with the bat and was also out of some games due to injury. But Fraser-McGurk took the tournament by storm by smashing 330 runs in 9 matches at a brilliant strike rate of 234. He also won the award for the highest strike rate in the season.
